Lowering the voting age at 16 years old has just recently entered the national debate in Romania, with a new bill entering in the parliamentary debate in 2022. Such debates are increasingly present in recent years in Europe, especially when it comes to local elections or those for the European Parliament. Some states in Europe have introduced alternative mechanisms through which 16-17 yo youth can become used with the voting rights.

In the Romanian society there are already new voices asking for a better political representation of young people between 16 and 18 yo. Constitutional and political issues have emerged in the current debate on the topic. In this paper, Quartet Institute and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung are presenting a new analysis authored by Alexandru Manda on the arguments in favor or against lowering the voting age to 16 yo.

The analysis, in Romanian, can be read here: „Vot la 16 ani? Argumente pro și contra”
